Founded in 1945, South Shore Artists Group expanded from a handful of members to a forty strong group of professionally educated and self taught artists located in Staten Island, New York.

The South Shore Artists Group had its beginnings in 1945 when an artist named Thea Wilbur Olsen and a few friends got together to paint in Wolf’s Pond Park for the benefit of Richmond Memorial Hospital. They met each Tuesday, weather permitting and moved indoors when winter came. Their first exhibit was held at the Chevrolet dealership on Main Street in Tottenville in 1946 and was very well received. In no time at all the membership began to rise.
While many of today’s members have art backgrounds, others are self taught. Each brings his or her own style to SSAG and everyone is genuinely supportive of each other. The members meet regularly on Tuesdays, as they have since the beginning, to discuss artistic process, to create and to learn from each other as well as guest artists.
SSAG exhibits in such places as Conference House Park, the Art Lab, the Staten Island Zoo, St. John’s University and various Staten Island libraries and restaurants. Most importantly, the artists of SSAG are friends just like the original members were 70 years ago.

52nd Annual Art Exhibit
The 52nd Annual Art Show at Conference House Park took place on Sunday, June 2, under clear blue skies. Over fifty artists, young and old, participated in the event. A wide variety of art including oil, pastel, watercolor and pen and ink was on display, and the respective artists were happy to speak with visitors about their particular styles.
A big hit, as usual, was the crafts table for children. Children of all ages were able to paint shells or rocks, create foam people, and make fashion dolls, visors, or collage. They were also free to simply do their own thing. The artists were on hand to assist the youngsters in whatever endeavor they chose to pursue. The Fair was enhanced this year by the wonderful paintings of the Pre-K 4 class of the Jewish Community Center on Manor Road. The South Shore Artists hope they will be future members of the group. The Art Show was a spectacular success and all who were present seemed to have had a wonderful time. |
